Stephen Gerrard set to leave boyhood club at the end of the season.

Social media, football fans and ex-players alike have shown their recognition to a BPL great today, following the news that Liverpool legend Stephen Gerrard will leave the club at the end of the season.

He has entertained us with goals, assists and skill since his introduction to the Premier League in 1998, and every fan will cherish their own special memory, whether it be his leadership in the journey to becoming the Champions of Europe in 2005, or his screamer against Manchester United, there are many to chose from.

Today however, the Liverpool skipper has confirmed the speculation that the journey is coming to a halt, and his statement shows his relationship to Liverpool football club, describing it as one of the

"toughest decisions of my life".
Gerrard has left with dignity and has demonstrated his loyalty to Liverpool, stating how:

"I'm going to carry on playing and although I can't confirm at this stage where that will be, I can say it will be somewhere that means I won't be playing for a competing club and will not therefore be lining up against Liverpool - that is something I could never contemplate."

The announcement has caused global reaction to a great player, one which has focussed more on his time at Liverpool, opposed to the recent 'slip-up' in the title race last season.

Regardless of team preferences, the football world can unite in the fact that Stephen Gerrard has been an influential figure to the Premier League, and an inspiration to young fans. He is a figure which will be missed, but given the future opportunity, would no doubt be welcomed back with open arms.
